A humid Sunday morning, not one for super quick times, so just running. This was my first 5k race this summer and my second race after the Tracksmith mile. I feel in good shape – around 17:40ish time wise. That was never on the cards today, so the win was very satisfying. This was part of Thanet Roadrunners 5 & 10k Sunday race with everybody going off together, which was really helpful. It allowed me to sit in behind 4 of the quick 10k runners and enjoy something to run towards.
2.5k or thereabouts 5k course split from the 10k course, which left me out in front on my own (nearest runner to me was around 30secs behind) and this doubled with the humidity made it all that little bit harder. I was definitely better at sitting with the discomfort than in the mile, but this still something to work on. By the time I got back to the playing field my brain was happily looking for reasons to slow down. As I was well off a PB / decent time and far enough in front to comfortably win I relaxed for the last 400m and enjoyed coming into win.
This is the first organised race I’ve won – so that is something to cherish. Alongside which as I won my age group I got double trophies! Once I stopped the humidity was so evident as the sweat that pooled on my arms was nuts. A really nice race with a great group of runners. Fingers crossed the weather in 3 weeks is far less humid, my training continues to build and I post something faster. All building towards th longer races later this year.
